Israel Pickens, Ala.'s third governor, was born on 1780 Jan. 30 in Mecklenburg County, N.C. He was educated in private schools and graduated from the law department of Washington College, Pa. He was a member of the N.C. Senate, 1808-1810, and a representative in Congress, 1811-1817.

In 1817 he removed to the Ala. Territory, just before Ala. became a state. He was the register in the land office at St. Stephens, Ala. He represented Washington County, Ala. in the 1819 State Constitutional Convention. In 1821 he was elected governor. During his term of governor, General Lafayette visited Ala.

In 1826 he was appointed by President John Quincy Adams to the U.S. Senate to fill an unexpired term. In 1827 Pickens went to Cuba in hopes of improving his health, but died there on April 24, 1827.

Other Pickens family members include Andrew Pickens (1739-1817) who was a cousin of Israel Pickens; Andrew L. Pickens (1817-1854) and Israel L. Pickens (1820-1852) who were Israel Pickens' sons; Martha ("Patsy") Orilla Lenoir Pickens (1792-1823) who married Israel Pickens in 1814 and who was a daughter of General William Lenoir (1751-1839[?]) and sister of William A. Lenoir.

Additional family members were Samuel Pickens, Jr. (1782[?]-1855) who was a brother of Israel Pickens; Chiliab S. Howe who married Julia Ann Mira Pickens (1815-1898), Israel Pickens' daughter.
