George Parsons Lathrop, American critic, writer, and literary historian, was the son-in-law of Nathaniel Hawthorne. His defense of the novel as the most powerful and popular form of literature, and his support of a realistic approach to writing helped define turn-of-the-century American literature. He is also remembered for his appreciation and support of women writers and for Ralph Waldo Emerson's place in world literature.
