Doug Peacock served as a medic in the Vietnam Conflict. He moved to Montana upon his return from Vietnam and has become a grizzly and bison expert, author, activist and filmmaker. Peacock was also the model for Ed Abbey's character Hayduke in The Monkeywrench Gang.
