Massachusetts. Committee on Criminal Justice

St 1967, c 798 established the Committee on Law Enforcement and Administration of Criminal Justice (initially also known as the Governor's Committee on Law Enforcement and Administration of Justice). St 1973, c 1021 reconstituted the body as the Committee on Criminal Justice, at which time it acquired all records of the Governor's Public Safety Committee (established 1966). It advises the governor on all phases of the adult and juvenile systems of law enforcement and criminal justice in Massachusetts; it conducts studies, collects and analyzes statistical data, administers grant programs, and recommends policy in these areas.

Serving as part of the governor's department (MGLA c 6, s 17), the committee is for administrative purposes considered an agency of the Executive Office of Public Safety (Manual of the General Court since 1979). Since 1995 it has become more commonly known as the executive office's Programs Division. Its functions are currently described in MGLA c 6, ss 156-156B.

The Juvenile Justice Advisory Committee was established as Massachusetts's state advisory group mandated by the federal Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act (JJPDA) of 1974. Its membership consists of a wide variety of persons knowledgeable about the juvenile justice system, including police and probation officers, academics, treatment personnel, and program administrators. It shares responsibility with the Committee on Criminal Justice in evaluating juvenile justice grant applications.
