Robbins, Avis N.

Hide Profile

Living in Bridgton, Indiana, Avis N. Robinson and her high school friends wrote to each other about the prospect of getting married and then supported each other as their spouses went to fight in World War I. In June of 1917, Avis married Hugh Robbins, a brakeman for the Central Indiana Railway Company. He later enlisted with the artillery and trained at Forts Hamilton and Wadsworth in New York. Hugh did serve in France, but he was an assistant cook and was involved in minimal combat. Upon his return from war, Hugh and Avis began their household and had three children; Enoch, Richard, and Virginia (Jinnie). Enoch was the first to enlist in the armed services for combat during World War II and trained with the Infantry in Texas and Louisiana. Enoch did spent a good deal of time fighting abroad. His fiancee Helen, stayed with Hugh and Avis in Indiana as Enoch served in France, Belgium, and Germany. Richard took a different route and was stationed in the South Pacific as an Army engineer. While in Australia, he met and married Nancy; they both returned to the United States after the war along with their first child. Jinnie relocated to New York, where she married Jack Atkinson and found work as an office clerk.
