Costen Jorden Harrell, Methodist bishop and educator, was born in Holly Grove, Gates County, North Carolina, 12 February 1885, and died in Decatur, Georgia, 29 November 1971. He became a bishop of the Southeastern Jurisdiction of the Methodist Church in 1944, was a visiting professor at Candler School of Theology, member of Emory University Board of Trustees (1931-1964), a member of the Methodist Uniting Conference (1939), and author of many articles and fourteen books related to Methodism and Christianity. He married Amy Patton Walden in 1917.
