John W. Bruce (1857-1911) was born in N.S., Canada and emmigrated to the U.S. (1880), settling in Gunnison, Gunnison County, Colo. The family later lived in Paonia, Colo. before moving to Denver, Colo. in 1919. John W. Bruce served as Justice of the Peace for Gunnison County and his wife, Sophie also operated the Paonia Post Office for a number of years. The couple had four children: Emma (1883), Charles (1884), Nellie (1891) and John Grant (1894). The children all attended high school in Gunnison and Paonia with John Grant also attending the Culver Summer Navel School (1915). He would later go on to serve with the Colo. National Guard's 157th Regiment during WWI and worked as a photographer for the Denver Public Schools.
