Henry Newman, the New England born secretary of the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge of London, provides documentation covering the period of the emigration from Salzburg, an ecclesiastical principality of the old Holy Roman Empire.

Eli Jones, son of Abel and Susannah Jones m. Sybil Jones, dau. of Ephraim and Susannah Jones. They were ministers in the Society of Friends who traveled widely as missionaries. At the end of the 1860s, they established a mission, including the Friends Training Home, in Mt. Lebanon, Lebanon. Brummana is a village in the Metn region of Mt. Lebanon. Theophilus Waldemeier was a teacher, perhaps the headmaster at the school. Artist Newman lived at the Training Home which opened in 1876. The Friends Training Home included a school for boys and a separate school for girls.
