Isaac J. Sparks (1804-1867) was born in Maine and traveled to Los Angeles in 1832. By 1838 he had established an otter trapping business near Santa Barbara. A Mexican land grant gave him the 22,000 acre Rancho Huasna in San Luis Obispo County in 1843.
