Charles A. P. Hatfield served as a Lieutenant in Company E of the Fourth United States Cavalry commanded by Colonel Ranald S. Mackenzie and fought against Southern Plains Indians in the Red River War, 1874-1875. On September 28, 1874, Hatfield participated in the battle of Palo Duro Canyon, the major battle of the Red River War and the Plains Indians' last effort at armed resistance.
