Prof. Alice Littlefield earned her Ph. D. in Anthropology from Mich. State University in 1976. For over 30 years, she has been a prof. at CMU, teaching courses on the cultures of North American indigenous peoples, among others. Prof. Littlefield has carried out field research in southern Mexico and among Mich. tribes, including an ethnohistorical study of the Mount Pleasant Indian School. She is the author of several articles on the education of Native Americans in the U.S. and is a co-editor of Native Americans and Wage Labor, published in 1996. The Indian Education Project was begun at CMU to attract and retain Native American students at CMU by various programs, including establishing an Indian Academy in Mich. Further research conducted by Mich. State University under the auspices of CMU resulted in the publication of two books, Indian education project 1974 and Indian education project: an abridgement, copies of which are available in the Clarke.
