Robert C. Gaede was born in Cleveland in 1920. He graduated from Cleveland Heights High School in 1938 and received a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Michigan in 1947. For the last almost 50 years, he has been working as an architect and historical preservationist in the Cleveland area, helping to preserve and restore many historic properties in Ohio and in other states. During that time he established two very successful architectural firms, the current of which is, Gaede Serne Architects, Inc., founded in 1975. Additionally, he helped to establish the architectural program at Kent State University, was one of the founding members of the Cleveland Landmarks Commission (CLC), and has been a professional activist and advocate through his work on various committees with the CLC, the American Institute of Architects (AIA), and in partnership with many private and public, local and national organizations.
