The Adelphic Literary Society was organized in 1898, and was one of the earliest literary societies in the University of Minnesota School of Agriculture. Membership was divided into two categories: active (limited to students currently enrolled who were accepted into the Society), and honorary (faculty and graduates who had been active members). The purpose of the Society was to give its members opportunities to practice various kinds of public speaking, including debate, oratory, and other forms. Eventually the scope of activities broadened to include general cultural activities.
