Truly, Richard
Variant namesAdmiral Richard H. Truly was an instructor at the U.S. Air Force Aerospace Research Pilot School, Edwards Air Force Base, California from 1963-1965. In 1965 he became one of the first military astronauts for U.S. Air Force. He transferred to the NASA astronaut program in 1969. He served as capsule communicator for all three Skylab missions and worked on the Apollo-Soyuz mission in 1975. In 1977 he piloted the Space Shuttle Enterprise approach and landing tests. He piloted the Space Shuttle Columbia in 1981 [STS-2] and commanded the space shuttle Challenger [STS-8] in 1983. President Reagan appointed Truly the Associate Administrator for Space Flight at NASA from 1986-1988. He headed the Challenger accident investigation and its return to flight program. In 1989 President George H.W. Bush appointed him the Administrator of NASA until his resignation in 1992. His many awards include the Robert J. Collier Trophy which he won in 1982 and again in 1989.
