James Richard Jewett (1862-1943) was born in Westport, Maine, March 14, 1862 and had a distinguished career as a University Professor in Semitic languages, Oriental history, and Arabic languages. After graduating from Harvard in 1884 he held a Harvard fellowship from 1884-1887, and in 1891 received his Ph. D. from the University of Strassburg. Following several instructional and professorial appointments at various universities from 1887-1911, including Harvard, Brown University, University of Minnesota, and the University of Chicago, Dr. Jewett was appointed professor of Arabic at Harvard University from 1911-1933 and emeritus therafter.
