Burton was born August 18, 1871, in Virginia. In 1916 he became the editor of the religion and social services department of the Rocky Mountain News.He was a Baptist minister and Doctor of Divinity. He also studied the classics and in 1946 found a brass plate traceable to a Sanscrit epic poem, The Mahabharata dating from 4,000 B.C. Burton transcribed the contents of the plaque. Burton died in 1951.
