Bostian, Carey Hoyt, 1907-2000.
Carey Hoyt Bostian served as a faculty member at North Carolina State College from 1930 to 1973. He was born March 1, 1907 in China Grove, North Carolina. Educated at Salisbury High School, he left North Carolina in 1924 to study at Heidelberg College in Tiffin, Ohio. He returned to North Carolina in 1925 to attend Catawba College, receiving his Bachelor's degree in 1928. He received his Master's degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1930 and his Ph.D. from the same school in 1933. He was a teaching fellow at the University of Pittsburgh from 1928 to 1930, had special training at the University of Chicago in 1930, and was an instructor at Catawba College during the 1934 summer session.
Bostian joined the faculty at North Carolina State College in 1930 as an assistant professor in zoology. He became an associate professor in 1936, and a full professor in 1946. Also in 1946, Bostian was appointed assistant director of instruction in the State College School of Agriculture. In 1948, he became the associate dean of the School of Agriculture, and became director of instruction in 1950. During this year, he also became a professor in the genetics department. His title changed to director of instruction, School of Agriculture, in 1952.
On September 1, 1953, Bostian became the seventh chancellor of North Carolina State College. He was formally installed on February 22, 1954. Bostian oversaw a multimillion dollar expansion during his tenure, which included enrollment surpassing 5,000 students.
In 1959, Bostian resigned as chancellor in order to return to teaching. He helped establish the Faculty Senate, and served as its chairman from 1962 to 1963. Bostian continued to teach genetics at North Carolina State until his retirement in 1973.
Bostian was a member of numerous organizations, including Sigma Xi, the Poultry Science Association, the Genetics Society of America, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Association of University Professors, the North Carolina Academy of Science, Phi Kappa Phi, Alpha Zeta, and the National Association of Land-Grant Colleges and Universities.
Bostian received many awards at North Carolina State, including the Blue Key Award and the Alumni Distinguished Professor Award. In 1975, Bostian received a Watauga Medal, the highest honor the university awards. In 1980, the university dedicated Bostian Hall as a new building for scientific instruction. Also in this year, the Alumni Association awarded Bostian an Award of Merit for the greatest service by a non-alumnus to the university. In 1986, a 246-bell carillon was dedicated to him and his wife, Neita. Bostian's son, Dr. Lloyd Bostian, established The Chancellor Carey Bostian Scholarship, to be awarded annually to a student in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences interested in genetics. In addition, The Carey and Neita Bostian Library Endowment contributes to buying human genetics materials.
Bostian died on April 22, 2000.
