Born on 15 Sept. 1895 in Geelong, Vic., McCallum studied law at the University of Melbourne. He enlisted on 16 July 1915 (no.7887), served as a private with the 7th Field Ambulance, and was repatriated to Australia on 9 March 1919. In July 1919, he joined the staff of the Public Library of Victoria, and completed his Bachelor of Arts in 1923. He married Doris Eleanor East in 1924, and their son Brian was born in 1928. He was Chief Librarian of the Public Library, 1945-1960, and was awarded the OBE. He died on 3 July 1981.
