D (1942), UC Berkeley; research assoc. and instructor of Chinese, Univ. of Chicago, 1937-40; research assoc., Oriental languages, UC Berkeley, 1942-43; asst. professor of Chinese and head of Chinese language section, US Dept. of the Navy Language School, Univ. of Colorado, 1943-45; asst. professor of Chinese studies (1945-46), Univ. of Toronto; assoc. professor of Chinese and acting director of the school of Chinese studies (1946-47), assoc. professor (1947-52), professor (1952-80), and, in 1980, emeritus professor of Oriental languages, UCLA; publications include Dynastic booty : an altered Chinese bronze (1948), Chinese moveable type printing in the eighteenth century (1954), and Illustrated botanical works in China and Japan (1966).
