At the formation of the Association of Evangelical Lutheran Churches in 1976, Dr. Elwyn Ewald was appointed Executive Secretary. He served in this capacity from the formation of the AELC until the ELCA merger, 1976 to 1987. The office of Executive Secretary became responsible for the day by day functioning of the organization.
