The Oxford Carpet Mills were constructed in 1832 by William Hogg in what is now the northeastern part of Philadelphia. William, Sr., retired in 1846, leaving the business to his two sons, William, Jr., and James. They operated it as William & James Hogg & Company until 1850, when James Hogg withdrew from the firm. It was thereafter operated as William Hogg, Jr., & Company, and eventually incorporated as the Oxford Manufacturing Company.
