Economist and statistician. Born 7 April 1904, Ulverstone, Tasmania. Came to Canberra to work in Commonwealth Bureau of Census and Statistics, 1932-1935, becoming Commonwealth Statistician and Adviser to the Treasury, 1935-1940. Served as Secretary to Dept. of Labour and National Service during the Second World War. Later positions include Director of the Commonwealth Bank, 1951-1959, 1966-1975 and Director of the Reserve Bank, 1960-1966.
