Kollock-Thoromon family.
The Kollock-Thoromon family papers on microfilm are part of a privately held family collection. Catharine Kollock Thoromon inherited this collection from her aunts Susan Marion Kollock (III, also known as "Sister") and Louisa Bell Kollock Miner. Susan and Louisa discovered them in the family house, Woodlands (Clarkesville, GA) in the 1920s or 1930s. All three women are descendants of George Jones Kollock, the author or recipient of many of these papers.
George Jones Kollock, the son of Dr. Lemuel and Maria Campbell Kollock, was born in Savannah in 1810. George Kollock began practicing law in Savannah in 1832. For several years he and John M. Miller partnered a law firm in Savannah. Kollock married Priscilla Johnston in 1836. She died later that same year after giving birth to a daughter, Augusta Johnston Kollock. In 1840, George Kollock married Priscilla's sister, Susan Marion Johnston. They eventually had seven children: George Jones, John Fenwick, William Waring, Susan Marion, Mary Fenwick, Annie Houstoun, Louisa Belle.
Between 1836 and the early 1860s, Kollock owned several Chatham County plantations including Rosedew (also known as Rosedue, Rosdue, and Rose Dhu) and land on Ossabaw Island. Additionally, he managed Retreat, land inherited by his daughter Augusta, at Coffee Bluff/White Bluff on the Little Ogeechee River. The principal crops at these plantations were cotton and corn. By 1850, Kollock and his family had a permanent home in Clarkesville (Habersham County), Georgia called "Woodlands." George Jones Kollock died in 1894.
Several Kollock family collections exist in other institutions including the University of Georgia, Emory University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Additional information on the Kollock family can be found at the start of "The Kollock Letters" in the Georgia Historical Quartlery, Volume 30, Issue 3, beginning on page 218.
