Caleb F. Davis was born in Clarksburg, W.V. and came to Keokuk, Iowa in 1849. He was a prominent businessman and citizen, connected with various Keokuk business enterprises including the mercantile firm of McGavic Chittenden & Co., Imperial Mills and the Keokuk Savings Bank (Davis was one of the bank's organizers and served as its president in the 1870s). He was also an avid collector of relics and materials related to the early history of Lee County and the state of Iowa and contributed frequently to the collections and publications of the Iowa Historical Dept.
