John Austin Kerr received his medical degree from Northwestern University in 1924. He spent virtually his entire professional career, 1926-1965, as a staff member of the Rockefeller Foundation. His focus was the epidemiology of malaria and the implementation of malaria eradication programs.

John Austin Kerr joined the staff of the International Health Division of the Rockefeller Foundation in 1926 and served as consultant to the World Health Organization. He was director of the Ente Regionale per la Lotta Anti-Anofelica en Sardengna (ERLAAS)in 1946-1947 and worked for the U.S. Agency for International Development inthe Philippines in 1965-1966.
