John Wilkes Booth, the assassin of President Abraham Lincoln, was shot and killed on April 26, 1865. Booth's body was held at various locations by the U.S. government until a release was signed by President Andrew Johnson. The body was removed from its temporary grave in the yard of the Old Penitentiary on the Washington Arsenal grounds on February 18th, 1869. Wilkes' body was buried in an unmarked grave in the Booth family plot in Green Mount Cemetery, Baltimore, Maryland on June 26, 1869.
