White, Edward Douglass, 1795-1847

Edward Douglass White was born in Maury County, Tenn., and moved to Louisiana as a boy with his father. After graduating from the University of Nashville in Nashville, Tenn., White began practicing law in Donaldsonville, La. He was appointed judge of the New Orleans Municipal Court in 1825. From 1829 until his resignation in 1834, White served three terms as a representative in the U.S. Congress, where he was member of the Whig Party and an ally of Henry Clay. After serving one term as governor of Louisiana from 1835-1839, he was reelected to Congress for two subsequent terms. His son Edward Douglass White served as chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.
