General Whisenand entered flight school in 1934 and graduated a year later. After tours of duty in California, North Carolina and Florida, he joined the 312th Fighter Wing in the China Theater, transferred to the 10th Air Force in Burma and was later named chief of staff. Whisenand returned to the United States in 1946, was appointed chief of the Special Projects Division at the Air War College and, by 1950, the general was appointed assistant deputy Air Force member on the Joint Strategic Plans Committee. He assumed command of the 388th Fighter Bomber Wing in 1954 and then moved that unit from New Mexico to Etain, France. Shortly thereafter, General Whisenand was assigned to England and in 1956 was named deputy commander of the Third Air Force at South Ruislip. In 1957, he once again returned to the United States and became special assistant to the chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff. He retired from the Air Force in May of 1963 and died in 1967.
