McLain Family Band

Raymond K. McLain founded the McLain Family Band while serving as Director of the Hindman Settlement School at Hindman, Knott County, Kentucky. In varying combinations, band members included McLain children, Raymond W., Alice, Ruth, Nancy Ann and Michael and various of their spouses. In 1971, the family moved to Berea where two of the children entered Berea College and the elder McLain taught Bluegrass Music courses. Extensive touring included performances in sixty-two countries and forty-nine states. United States venues included community arts events, schools and bluegrass festivals, symphony orchestra performances, TV and radio programs of their own and others. They recorded fourteen LPs on their own Country Life label and in 1978, they began a bluegrass festival, which was held annually through 1987. The McLain Family Band formally disbanded in 1989.
