Martha Barrow Turnbull was born at Highland Plantation in West Feliciana Parish, La., in 1809. Along with her husband, Daniel Turnbull (1799-1861), she founded Rosedown Plantation in the same parish in 1835. An avid horticulturalist, she assembled a large collection of botanical specimens that she planted in extensive gardens at the plantation.
