George Worthington Adams served as Chair of the Southern Illinois University History Department in the 1960s. He is the author of the book, Doctors in Blue: the Medical History of the Union Army in the Civil War (1952), and editor of, Reminiscences of the Civil War and Reconstruction (1970). According to a news note in the Mississippi Valley Historical Review, volume 48, Number 2, Dr. Adams left Southern Illinois University in 1961 to become Professor of History and Academic Vice President of the University of Alaska. However, Adams' limited correspondence collection in the Southern Illinois University Archives indicates that he may have remained in Carbondale. He was elected to serve on the editorial board of the Ulysses S. Grant Association in 1964.
