After leaving school Larry A. French (1917 - 1988) beome a barber in his father's shop until enlisting in the army at Cairo, Illinois on July 9, 1917.

He served as a bugler in Company K, 130th Infantry. Shipped to France, he saw service on the Somme and during the Meuse Argonne offensive of 1918. Following the armistice, he served with the army of occupation until sailing home on the U.S.S. Siboney in the late spring of 1919. He was discharged on May 31, 1919 at Camp Grant, Illinois.
