Unit had been on inactive status at the University of Oregon Medical School since World War I, when it had functioned as Base Hospital No. 46. Alerted to prepare for activation on March 11, 1940, by order of Major James C. Magee, Surgeon General of the United States Army. The War Department appointed J. Guy Strohm, M.D., as unit director during the organizational period and as commanding officer during active duty. Unit activated on July 15, 1943; proceeded to Fort Riley, Kansas; later ordered to North Africa, arriving in Oran, Algeria, on September 2, 1943; relocated to Besancon, France, in August 1944.
