Edwin L. Mechem was born in Alamogordo, New Mexico in 1912. He was admitted to the New Mexico Bar in 1939, and served as a land surveyor for the U.S. Reclamation Service (1932-1933), and as an investigator for the Federal Bureau of Investigations during World War II. Mechem served four terms as Governor of New Mexico: first and second term, 1951-1954; third term, 1957-1958; and fourth term, 1961-1962. In 1962 Mechem resigned from the governorship to become a United States Senator and Lieutenant Governor Tom Bolack complete his term as Governor.
