The 8th New Hampshire Infantry Regiment was organized in Manchester, New Hampshire, and mustered in December 1861. Attached to the Department of the Gulf, this unit was stationed at Ship Island, Mississippi; and in Southeastern Louisiana, including New Orleans, Donaldsonville, Opelousas, Port Hudson, Thibodaux, Fort Bisland, and Camp Parapet. In 1864, the regiment was redesignated as the 2nd New Hampshire Cavalry. This newly named unit saw duty in New Orleans and participated in the Red River Campaign.
