George Rogers was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts, in 1933. He attended Providence College and was both a teacher and a legislator by profession. Early in his legislative career he was a member of various community organizations including the Knights of Columbus, the Mattapoisett Land Trust, the New Bedford Area Center for Human Services, the Center for Portuguese-Speaking World at Southern Massachusetts University, the North End Community Center and the New Bedford Council on Aging. During his later tenure in the House, he served on the board of directors of the Agnes Braz-Hope S. Bean Memorial Community Center and was a member of the Wamsutta Club. He was also active in the New Bedford Democratic City Committee. Rogers was Mayor of New Bedford from 1970 to 1971. He was then City Councilor-at-Large 1975-1978 and again from 1980-2003. He represented the Bristol and Plymouth District in the Massachusetts State Senate (1975-1978). He represented the 12th Bristol District in the Massachusetts House 1965-1970 and 1999-2003. During his 1999-2003 tenure he served on the Ways and Means Committee. His legislative priorities were education reform, legalized gaming, restoration of passenger rail service between New Bedford and Boston, and the establishment of the University of Massachusetts at the Dartmouth Law School.
