Hide Profile
Fort Atkinson was established by the War Department in 1840 during the early stages of removal of the Winnebago Indians from Wisconsin. The Fort was built as a temporary post to keep the Winnebago Indians west of the Mississippi River on land then known as Neutral Ground in Iowa. In 1848 the Winnebago were removed to Minnesota, and there was no longer a need for troops to be stationed in the Neutral Ground. The Fort was abandoned in 1849. After years of historical and archaeological investigations and efforts to acquire the property, the site was dedicated in 1968 by the State Conservation Commission as the Fort Atkinson State Monument Preserve.
