The Newberry Library bookshop was established in its own space in 1975, when the Newberry Library Associates paid for the construction and furnishing of a bookshop/volunteers office in what was formerly the cloakroom.
The bookshop was operated by Associates volunteers until 1978-1979, when a part-time staff member, reporting to the Development Office, was hired. In 1983-1984, the store was transferred to the Administrative Services Division under Joel Samuels. Since 1985, the shop has reported to the Controller and Vice President for Finance and Administration.
