Geneticist. John Gowan (1893-1967), a native of Florida, received his B.S. (1914) and M.S. (1915) from the University of Maine. He received his Ph.D (1917) from Columbia University, was a biologist at the Maine Agricultural Experiment Station (1921-1926), and at the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research (1926-1937). He came to Iowa State University as Professor of Genetics (1937-1964) and also served as Head of the Department (1948-1964). He then was a Professor of radiation biology and genetics at Colorado State University (1964-1967).
Professor Gowan was a member of numerous academic societies, including the Biometric Society, the American Genetic Association, the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and American Naturalists. He was also a member of Sigma Xi, Phi Kappa Phi and Phi Beta Kappa.
