Eastern Pacific Oceanic Council (EPOC) was founded in November 1954 to further oceanographic and biological investigations in the Eastern Pacific for the benefit of fisheries. It assisted in the coordinated planning and execution of work at sea and exchanged research program results. EPOC was modeled on ICES, but it was a private rather than governmental organization. Members included heads of oceanographic institutions, fisheries biologists and federal officials interested in fisheries and oceanography. Its functions changed in the 1970's when block grants to institutions were replaced with grants to individual researchers.
