Born in Cicero, Illinois, Donald F. White graduated from the University of Michigan College of Art and Design with B.S. and M.S. degrees. He was the first African-American to become a registered architect in the state of Michigan. He is a former president of the National Technical Association. He has worked on projects in Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, and Liberia. He also taught architecture at Prairie View A&M University in Texas. He was a member of the American Institute of Architects-Detroit Chapter, Detroit Board of Commerce, and the Economic Club of Detroit.
