Godfrey S. Gundrum joined the 15th Indiana Infantry Regiment on 14 June 1861. He rose to the rank of commissary sergeant by the time he was mustered out. Sources indicate his family resided in Montgomery, Indiana, during the war, but that he later moved to Vanderburgh County. The 15th Indiana Infantry, organized in Lafayette, was mustered in on 14 June 1861. It saw action in Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee, fighting in such battles as Shiloh, Stone's River, and Chattanooga. It was mustered out on 25 June 1864. Out of 1,220 men, 171 were killed or died of other causes, 115 deserted, and 17 were unaccounted for.
