William V. Meeker first enlisted in Co. I, 1st Vermont Infantry Regiment on May 2, 1861, in Middlebury, Vermont, and was selected as the company's first sergeant. He was mustered out August 15, 1861. He enlisted in Co. G, 11th Vermont Volunteer Infantry Regiment on August 5, 1862, in New Haven, Vermont, and again was selected as first sergeant. He was promoted to second lieutenant in Co. C, 11th Vermont March 29, 1863. He was promoted to first lieutenant in Co. G, 11th Vt. Inf. on December 28, 1863 and mustered out June 24, 1865. He married Susan Hawthorne, of Hampton, New York, and had three daughters, Mary, Adeline, and Susie. Immediately after the war, he lived in Rutland, Vermont and worked as a printer.
