At the closing plenary of the fourth assembly of the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) held in Helsinki, Finland July 30-August 11, 1963, delegates unanimously elected the Rev. Fredrik A. Schiotz as its fourth president. Pastor Schiotz would have served the regular six-year term, but the 1969 assembly was postponed to 1970 because the government of what was then East Germany refused to allow the assembly to be held in Weimar. Pastor Schiotz completed his term at the 1970 assembly held in Evian-les-Bains, France.
