Stewart family.
The brothers were the sons of Captain John Stewart of Rothesay, Bute, Scotland. John Tiffin Stewart was born in 1827, gained his qualifications as a civil engineer in Glasgow and, after his sojourn in Victoria, had a successful career as an engineer and surveyor in New Zealand.
