Nelson, Betty Jackson,
Betty Nelson was a native of Port Allen, La., and attended Port Allen Colored Elementary School and McKinley High School in Baton Rouge. As a teenager in the early 1950s, Nelson became active in African-American voter registration in West Baton Rouge Parish. She attended Leland College, Southern University, Los Angeles City College, and the University of Southern California. Upon returning to Louisiana, Nelson became active in Port Allen politics where she became one of the first African-American women elected to the West Baton Rouge Parish Police Jury.
