Hide Profile

Maude Elizabeth Coburn was born December 19, 1887, the daughter of Alex and Lula Cameron Coburn. She graduated from Spaulding High School in Barre, Vermont, in 1907. She went on to Goddard Seminary (1912-1913), the New England Conservatory of Music (1912-1913), and Lasell Seminary (1914-1915). She worked as a self-employed music teacher in Barre, Vermont, from 1915 until at least 1932.

Maud Coburn married James Marr Ewen (1879-1927) on July 1,1920 in Burlington, Vermont. The groom was the superintendent of Barclay Brothers, a granite manufacturing plant in Barre. James Marr Ewen was born in Aberdeen, Scotland, the son of stonecutter James (1852-August 6, 1911) and Elsie Marr Ewen. James and Elsie Ewen lived at 1 Orange Street in Barre. After their marriage, James and Maud moved into the home of Maud's mother, Lula Coburn, at 8 Orange Street.

James Ewen died in September, 1927. On May 15, 1929, Maud was involved in the purchase of a grocery store in Hartford, Vermont, with William H. Sawyer, Jr., a friend from Barre who lived at 54 Wellington Street. The business did not go well and Maud got out of the business, perhaps as early as October 15, 1929, although she remained friends with Sawyer.

In 1932 Maud applied for a position in the U.S. Dept. of Customs. She reported that she was a widow and that she had been an organist at the Episcopal Church for 24 years, from September 1903 until May 1927. She also said that she had been engaged in selling dresses since February 1931. In her later years Maud Ewen lived with William H. Sawyer, Jr., (September 21, 1896-March 12, 1993) at 8 Orange Street in Barre. Maude died March, 1975.
