George A. True was born in Funchal, Madeira Island, in September 1863 or 1864. He was the son of George True, a U.S. Consul, and his wife, Susan (Laughrey) True. In 1889 George A. moved to Detroit (Mich.). According to the federal census for Michigan, George was married to Myrtle H? and worked as a mechanical engineer in 1900. The couple lived at 154 McDougal Ave., Detroit. By 1910, George was married to Sallie, age 32, with whom he had a daughter, Jean, age 4. He was listed as the president of a factory [illegible word]. They lived with two servants at 169 McDougal Ave., Detroit. The last census in which George appeared is the 1920, in which he is listed as a civil engineer, age 56, a widower, who owned his home free of debt at 183 Seminol[e] Ave., Detroit. With him lived his children: Jean, age 14, and Russell George, age 9. George True was a member of the Detroit Fine Arts Society, the Detroit Water Color Society, the Hopkin Club, and the Scarab Club (an artists club). In 1915 he had eight of his etchings listed in the Scarab Club's annual exhibit catalog and another etching, #208 "From the Scarabs' Window" (a Detroit street scene), was featured in the catalog. True painted in oils and watercolors, but was particularly interested in etching. (This information is from the collection.).
