Donald Miles Gillmor was born in Fort Francis, Ontario. He earned his B.A. in 1949 from the University of Manitoba, his M.A. in journalism in 1950 and Ph.D. in mass communications in 1961 from the University of Minnesota. Professor Gillmor worked as a reporter (1950-1952) in Winnipeg, Ontario, Canada before he was appointed as an assistant professor at the University of North Dakota in 1952. He remained at North Dakota until 1965, at which time he joined the faculty of the department of journalism and mass communications at the University of Minnesota as an associate professor. He was promoted to professor in 1967 and appointed as director of the graduate program within the department from 1966-1973. In 1990, Dr. Gillmor was selected to be the first Silha professor of Media Ethics and Law. Dr. Gillmor is known for his research on media ethics and mass communication law. He retired from the University of Minnesota in 1988.
