Iwo Robert Waclaw Lominski was born on the 14th of August 1905 in Poland. He attended the University of Kraków, and graduated with an MD in 1931. He also worked at the Pasteur Institute in Paris before serving in the Polish Army in France during World War II. After this, he came to Glasgow in 1941.
Professor Lominski began as a Carnegie Teaching Fellow from 1943 - 1945, then progressed to Senior Lecturer while also working as an Honorary Consultant to the Western Infirmary from 1948 - 1963. After this he became a Reader in the Department of Bacteriology and Immunology at the Glasgow Western Infirmary. He was also awarded a DSc in 1963. From 1966 until his death, Lominski was the University’s first Professor of Microbiology.
Professor Lominski passed away in October 1968. The Dr Iwo Lominski Bursary was established in 1997 by Dr Erica P. Crichton in his memory. This bursary is awarded annually to any student undertaking the BSc degree in Microbiology in order to fund a medically-oriented vacation project.
